Surrounded by Olive groves and by the Chianti vineyards, Siena is one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany. One of Italy's best preserved medieval towns, located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is built on three hills and surrounded by well preserved walls. It is filled with fine examples of Gothic architecture and has one of the World's most unique Piazzas - Piazza del Campo, shaped like a shell with scalloped edges. Of course the World famous Palio di Siena - held every 02 July and 16 August, a colourful, bareback horse race round the Piazza del Campo, is an important part of Sienese identity, history and culture.

To the North visitors can enjoy the rich and stunning landscape of the Chianti hills, with vineyards, olive groves and ancient villages such as San Giminiano and Monteriggioni, enclosed by strong walls and offering wonderful views of the surroundings. To the South of Siena, the valley of the river Arbia leads to the hilltown of Montalcino, where the renowned Brunello wine is produced. Moreover the area called 'Le Crete' offers its visitors a unique landscape characterized by harsh and fascinating rock formation. Travelling West one gets closer to the sea, to the coastal towns such as Castiglione della Pescaia, and to the Maremma Nature Reserve, which certainly deserves a visit !

Boasting amazing natural and artistic resources, Siena can be reached both by car and by public transportation and it is an ideal base for an unforgettable Tuscan experience. The nearest International airports to Siena are Peretola airport in Florence and Gallileo Gallilei in Pisa. Siena can be reached by train from both Pisa and Florence. The railway station is located at the bottom of a long hill outside the City walls, travellers with luggage, should look for a taxi or bus from the stop opposite the Railway Station. Buses leave from Piazza Gramsci, located within the city walls, and connect Siena with Florence ( one hour ), Rome ( three hours ), Milan ( four and a half hours ) and many other towns in Tuscany and beyond.
